ZETA Applauds Bipartisan Passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a Landmark Victory for Gen-Z Digital Safety

April 30, 2025 — Washington, D.C. — Gen-Z Emerging Technology Action (ZETA) celebrates the historic, bipartisan passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a transformative federal law that establishes critical protections against nonconsensual intimate imagery and AI-generated deepfake pornography. The legislation, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives by an overwhelming 409–2 vote following unanimous Senate approval, now heads to President Donald Trump’s desk for signature.

ZETA extends its deepest gratitude to the lawmakers and advocates who helped us champion this cause:

  • First Lady Melania Trump, whose advocacy and leadership brought national attention to the devastating impact of deepfake abuse on young people, especially girls. Her engagement, including a Capitol Hill roundtable and public remarks, was instrumental in galvanizing bipartisan support for the bill.

  • Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who co-authored and introduced the legislation in the Senate, demonstrating a rare and powerful bipartisan commitment to online safety and victim protection.

  • Representative María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and Representative Madeleine Dean (D-PA), who led the House companion bill and emphasized the urgent need to protect victims of both real and AI-generated revenge pornography.

The TAKE IT DOWN Act criminalizes the intentional publication of nonconsensual intimate imagery, including AI-generated deepfakes, and requires social media platforms to remove flagged content within 48 hours of notification. This legislation marks a significant step in combating online exploitation and protecting individuals, particularly minors, from digital abuse.

“This is a monumental win for Gen-Z and all digital citizens,” said José Ignacio Gaona, ZETA President and CEO. “The passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act reflects a unified commitment to safeguarding our online spaces and ensuring that survivors have the necessary tools and protections.”

ZETA acknowledges that while this legislation is a significant advancement, continued efforts are necessary to address the evolving challenges of digital exploitation. We remain committed to advocating for comprehensive policies that protect the rights and well-being of all individuals in the digital age.
